Ashok Leyland Q1 net jumps over 2-fold at Rs 290.78 cr

Hinduja flagship firm Ashok Leyland today reported over two-fold jump in net profit at Rs 290.78 crore for the first quarter ended June 30, riding on robust volume growth.

The company had posted a net profit of Rs 144.49 crore in the same period last fiscal, Ashok Leyland said in a BSE filing.

Net sales during the quarter under review stood at Rs 4,175.79 crore as against Rs 3,775.29 crore in the year-ago period, up 10.6 per cent.

“We recorded a domestic volume growth of 18.5 per cent as against the industry growth of 14.5 per cent. Our initiatives on network development, operational efficiency, talent development and new products continue,” Ashok Leyland Managing Director Vinod K Dasari said.

Key export markets were down in June quarter of this fiscal but are expected to bounce back in the second quarter and beyond, he added.

MHCV (medium and heavy commercial vehicles) domestic volume for the quarter was at a record high of 22,061 and the company had reported orders from various state transport undertakings for nearly 3,600 buses to be executed this year, Ashok Leyland said.

The quarter includes a gain on currency and interest rate swap of Rs 49.67 crore as against Rs 18.05 crore in the previous year, it added.

Shares of Ashok Leyland were trading 1.98 per cent up at Rs 95.30 apiece on BSE.

The rupee on Monday opened eight paise lower at 70.96 against the US dollar amid drop in crude oil prices and rise in Asian equities. The domestic unit on Friday closed almost flat at 70.88 against after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in a widely expected move cut key interest rates by 0.25 percentage point.

On a weekly basis, the local unit slumped by 32 paise.


LIC pips private insurers in first-year premium growth during April-August

In the first five months of the current financial year, first-year premiums of life insurance companies grew by 39.84% (year-on-year) at Rs 1.05 lakh crore as compared to Rs 75,588.35 crore in April-August of 2018-19.

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) continued to grow at a faster pace compared to private insurance players, shows the data from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai).


Apollo Hospitals rules out further stake sale

Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (AHEL) has ruled out further dilution of promoters’ stake in the company. The company also said its Rs 1,337-crore stake sale of Apollo Munich Health Insurance with mortgage major HDFC will be concluded by October. Following these stake sales, the promoters’ pledged position will come down from a high of 76% to 54% by October and eventually to 20% by November or December, company sources said here.
