BSE Sensex: Week that saw bears run for cover

The benchmark indices hit lifetime highs on Friday after the European Central Bank (ECB) announced a monthly bond-buying programme of 60 billion euros. The BSE benchmark Sensex closed at a record high of 29,278.24 points, while NSE’s Nifty closed above the 8,800-mark. The Sensex ended the week with gains of over 4%.

On Friday, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth $336.66 million worth of shares, while the domestic institutional investors sold shares worth $216 million. In YTD, FIIs have bought $1.2 billion worth of shares.


Sensex, Nifty log new all-time highs

India’s equity markets on Wednesday registered new record highs for a consecutive day, led by strong buying from foreign investors. The benchmark BSE Sensex gained 104.19 points, or 0.36 per cent, to 28,888.86, while the National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty added 33.9 points, or 0.39 per cent, to 8,729.5.

The indices advanced despite shares of top-weight ITC ending five per cent lower, making 123-point negative contribution to the index. ITC’s rival Hindustan Unilever gained five per cent and was the biggest gainer on the Sensex, followed by Bharti Airtel (four per cent) and HDFC (2.7 per cent).


Sensex breaches 28,900-mark; Nifty at 8,730.45

The BSE Sensex breached the 28,900-mark and the NSE Nifty touched a new peak of 8,730.45 in early trade on Wednesday on sustained fund inflows, driven by the encouraging corporate earnings coupled with pre-budget optimism among participants.

Rising for the fifth straight day, the 30-share index rose by 155.25 points, or 0.53 per cent, to hit a new peak of 28,939.92.


Indian markets at 6-week high, Wipro net tops estimates

Indian stocks rose for a third day after Wipro, the third-biggest software exporter, reported profit that beat estimates and as crude oil traded in New York had its first weekly gain since November.

Wipro rallied the most in 18 months. Reliance Industries, owner of the world's largest refining complex, rose for a third day. Axis Bank jumped to a record. Hindustan Unilever tumbled the most since January 2011, after reporting the slowest sales growth in three quarters.


Sensex jumps 150 points driven by strong earnings

Mumbai: The 30-share benchmark S&P BSE Sensex Index was trading higher for a third consecutive day, up 150 points, after Wipro Ltd jumped over 7% on better-than-expected earnings.

At 12.04pm, the Sensex was up by 0.54%, or 150.51 points, at 28,272.40 points, while the 50-share CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was trading higher by 0.43%, or 37.05 points, at 8,550.85 points.


BSE announces change in banking index calculation

Rebalancing of the BSE's banking index, the S&P BSE Bankex, would now depend on the weightage of the index constituent spilling over 22 per cent.

BSE on Friday announced a change in the methodology of index calculation for the exchange's banking index. "Effective at the open of January 27, 2015, the index will follow modified market capitalization methodology, capping maximum weight of constituents to 22% at each rebalance," said the release from the exchange.


BSE to invest Rs 150 cr to set up international exchange in Gujarat

As per the agreement, "BSE will establish an international exchange in GIFT SEZ-IFC, a multi-services Special Economic Zone (SEZ) being developed as India's first International Financial Services Centre by Gujarat International Finance Tec-City Company Ltd."

BSE, along with its associates and members, will invest upto Rs 150 crore to set up this international exchange.


Adani Enterprises gains on pact with Australia's Woodside Energy

Adani Enterprises is trading higher by 3% at Rs 519 on National Stock Exchange (NSE) in otherwise subdued market after the company has tied up with Australia's Woodside Energy to source liquefied natural gas (LNG), and for oil & gas exploration and production opportunities.

Adani Enterprises has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Australian energy major Woodside Energy for cooperation for exploring business opportunities across a broad spectrum in oil and gas sector in India, as part of the Vibrant Gujarat initiative, the company said in a statement.


Market climbs as Infosys rallies on earnings, outlook

The BSE Sensex and Nifty on Friday rose for a consecutive session, paring a weekly loss, as Infosys, the country's second-largest software exporter reported profit that beat estimates and global stocks rallied.

Infosys rallied the most in three months after the company maintained its annual sales forecast. The stock now has the highest weighting on the Sensex, up from a third place on Thursday.


FIIs, promoters pare stake in Infosys during Q3

Promoters and foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have reduced their stake in information technology (IT) major Infosys during the third quarter (Oct-Dec) of the current fiscal.

Total promoter holding in Infosys has declined by nearly 300 basis points to 13.8% at the end of the third quarter from 15.92% in the second quarter ended September 30, 2014. FIIs shareholding in the software giant has decreased by 109 basis points to 41.58% from 42.67% in past three months.
