The flood situation in Assam worsened as it has affected 17.2 lakh people in 24 districts. Nearly 75 per cent of the Kaziranga National Park (KNP), a World Heritage Site, was inundated, leading to the drowning of two female hog deer and one male swamp deer in the northern range of the park.

The mighty Brahmaputra river and its tributaries have submerged 2,500 villages, destroyed 1.06 lakh hectares of crop-land, damaged infrastructure by breaching the embankments and overrunning roads and bridges, thereby disrupting surface communication.

The flood-hit districts are Lakhimpur, Bongaigaon, Darrang, Jorhat, Golaghat, Cachar, Dhemaji, Biswanath, Karimganj, Sonitpur, Majuli, Barpeta, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Morigaon, Chirang, Dibrugarh, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, South Salmara, Charaideo, Goalpara and Karbi Anglong.

In Majuli 58 revenue villages have been affected with nearly 48000 people, 1760 hectare crop area damaged and hundreds rendered homeless.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), along with the authorities and police, have so far rescued 7,814 people, who were marooned in 16 districts.

Nearly one lakh people have taken shelter at 231 relief camps.

Food, water, medicines and other essential commodities are being supplied to these camps by the respective district authorities.

Other rivers flowing above the 'red' mark were the Burhidehing at Khowang in Dibrugarh, Subansiri at Badatighat in Lakhimpur, Dikhow in Sivasagar town.

At least 44 people have lost their lives in Assam, where 15 lakh people in 23 districts have been affected by the deluge.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal ordered an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the alleged spurt of deaths due to electrocution during the seasonal floods in Assam.

At Kaziranga National Park, there are two veterinary doctors at the moment to take care of animals’ health.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish over the current flood situation in various parts of the north-eastern region and assured all possible help to combat the situation.

Union health minister JP Nadda also assured all help to the Assam government in dealing with the flood situation and asked his ministry officials to keep in touch with the state's health department.
