NTPC set to pull plug on plan to buy DVC’s Bengal plant Posted on 19th December 2015 |
.jpg) |
In what could jeopardise the state-run thermal power producer Damodar Valley Corporation’s (DVC) debt reduction strategy, NTPC is likely to shelve a plan to take over DVC’s 2,520 MW Raghunathpur plant in West Bengal after the railways conveyed that it wasn’t interested in buying power from the utility. The first phase of the Raghunathpur plant was scheduled for commissioning in 2010 but even after a delay of nearly five years and a revised cost estimate of R7,500 crore, the utility continues to suffer from issues related to land acquisition for the rail and water corridors. Besides, the plant has failed to tie up a buyer.

NTPC takes big strides in renewable energy Posted on 17th November 2015 |
.jpg) |
NTPC Ltd figures among the world's top 10 coal-based power generators but in less than two years it will have an impressive portfolio of 1,000 Mw of green energy, too. It is already one of the top green power generators among the conventional power companies in the country, and soon enough will turn out to be a classic case of a "polluting" company becoming "cleaner". Some 110 Mw of solar power generation places it next to Reliance Power that has around 185 Mw renewable energy capacity with Tata Power (read Part IV of the series) topping the list in this category. Being a government-controlled entity, most of this change is driven by directives from the Centre. It is obligated to facilitate addition of another 10,000 Mw of clean power in the next five years. |

NTPC refuses to buy expensive natural gas from GAIL Posted on 13th November 2015 |
.jpg) |
Mumbai: State-run companies NTPC Ltd and GAIL (India) Ltd are at loggerheads with the former refusing to buy natural gas from the latter, even though the two have a long-term supply contract in place. Based on the existing contract, NTPC is supposed to buy around 2 million metric standard cubic metres per day (mmscmd) of liquified natural gas (LNG) from GAIL. For the current year, the contract price for this gas was fixed at close to $11-12 per million metric British thermal units (mmBtu). However, NPTC has failed to pick up any of this contracted gas so far this year, leaving GAIL, which sources the gas from a third party, in a spot. |
